5 Ways to Keep Your Carpet Looking Great

Carpets are a popular flooring option and for good reason; they are cozy, warm, and they feel great. Unless… they are dirty, matted, worn down, and stinky.

Here are 5 tips to help you keep your carpet both looking and feeling great!

#1 Use a Welcome Mat

Using a welcome mat is an easy, cheap, and effective way to increase the life of your carpets.

Place a welcome mat at each entrance of your home or office. Have your guests wipe their before they enter to significantly reduce the wear and tear on your carpets as well as minimize the amount hair, dust, and dirt that can get tracked in.

However, to keep your welcome mats working effectively you must be sure to vacuum or shake them out regularly and replace them every few months.

#2 Vacuum

Vacuuming regularly may sound like a pretty obvious way to keep your carpets looking and feeling great but how often should you be vacuuming?

As a general rule you should vacuum based on this equation: Number or people + number of pets in your home = The number of times you should vacuum each week .

So if you have two people and a cat your should be vacuuming your house at least 3 times a week.

That may seem like a lot but if you take care of your carpets now you will get the most wear out of them as well as all the health benefits of having a properly cleaned carpet.

#3 Carpet Cleaning

If you’re carpets are looking dirty then it’s past due to get them cleaned.

Carpets act like an air filter in your home and although they may look clean they can be filled with up to 40 lbs of dirt and other yucky stuff that build up in the fibers. That’s why most carpet manufacturers recommend that you have your carpets cleaned at least once a year or twice if you have pets.

Be sure to stay on a regular carpet cleaning schedule to renew them and keep them looking great.

#4 Use a Carpet Protector

Newly installed carpets have Scotchgaurd already applied to the fibers. However, normal wear and tear breaks down this protectant so you should be sure to reapply a carpet protectant, like Scotchgaurd, once a year.

#5 Change Your Air Vents

Experts recommend that you change out your air filters every 6-12 months at the very least. In addition to all of the health benefits, changing your air filters will also help keep your carpets cleaned by keeping dust and debris from collecting along the baseboards and entryways.

Another good way to help keep your air vents clean is by having your vents and ducts professionally cleaned every 3 to 5 years.
